History Night July 11 - Image
Image: The included aerial photo from 1948 looks west, with East Market Street featured on the right border of the image, in the present Walmart area. That same area was home to the York Mall which would open in 1968 and contained the Trans-Lux Movie Theaters. The Playland complex, in the center of the photo, opened in stages during the 1940s; it included roller-skating, entertainment, swimming, picnicking, basketball, volleyball and miniature golf. The half-mile track, in the upper left, opened in 1928 as Haines Park. It was the first track in Pennsylvania to hold weekly night horse races under electric lights. The park also featured rodeos, carnivals, and horse shows. Today the intersection of Northern Way and Eastern Boulevard falls within the infield of that former track.
